Arts & Business, which promotes private sector support for the arts, chief executive Colin Tweedy argues that it is this year that will see fundraising bottom out. Already its figures show a drop in individual giving in arts of seven per cent for 2008/2009 – a figure it was relatively grateful for given that it saw a drop of 14 per cent at the beginning of the 1990s. Arts groups are trying to armour themselves against looming public spending cuts through an aggressive pursuit of wealthy donors and increasingly sophisticated collaborations with both artistic rivals and the private sector. Colin Tweedy said it ought to brace itself for bad news in the spending round, but in the end, artists innovate to adapt to new environments. Latest figures from Arts & Business show that while corporate sponsorship has faltered in the past 12 months, especially outside London, donations from individuals have increased.

Johann Hari of the Independent named UK's leading cultural commentator
Johann Hari of the Independent was this morning named as the UK’s leading cultural commentator at the inaugural Comment Awards. Arts & Business supported this category, working with a panel of distinguished judges to find the cultural commentator whose articles stood out by stimulating knowledge and broadening debate.
